Extraction: Hidden Stories of a Seed
2025/26 – Digital 4K – 3min/Loop (Mixed Media Installation)
Ostkreuzschule

Extraction is a long-term mixed media project developed as a visual investigation into the links between extractivism, colonialism, and ecological crisis. The project originated from a personal investigation into my family history, focusing on an ancestor who played a prominent role in the French colonization of Vietnam and in the industrial exploitation of natural resources, particularly through the cultivation of Hevea brasiliensis and the extraction of liquid latex for rubber production.
The title of the project, Extraction, evokes multiple layers of meaning: it refers to industrial processes of resource removal, to genealogical lineage, and, more broadly, to the act of drawing something out. In this context, the term links botanical memory, familial transmission, and the environmental consequences of extractivist logic.
The images of this series act as fragments of collective, personal, and non-human memory, suspended between decomposition and recomposition, where vegetal matter extracted, transformed, and accumulated by humans becomes the surface of a stratified history.
